Who Are They?
AQABA (pro. A-kuh-buh) - A five-piece (sometimes six) indie / alternative / occasionally proggy / rock band playing original music, based near Bath, UK.
Musical style influences include The National, Death Cab for Cutie and Frightened Rabbit and with the band members coming to the project from a range of musical backgrounds, comprising Mark (piano / keyboards / vocals), James (drums / vocals), Jack (bass / vocals) and Alex (lead guitar).
Their first EP, ‘A Question of Going’, was recorded in the spring of 2018, followed by ‘Dive’ in 2019. As with a lot of musicians, lockdown then presented them with an extended songwriting opportunity and they recorded the album ‘Dry the Rain’, which was released in November 2021 featuring ten songs. This was followed by 2023’s ‘Beauty in the Deadheads’ EP with five new tracks, including vocal contributions from Zoe Newton.
They are currently finishing off a new 6-track EP called ‘Juicy Blue’ with the band performing some of the new material in their current live set, and now joined on the new EP and live shows by guitarist Alex Maidment.
The album and EPs can be streamed on all the major platforms, with a CD package available at live shows.
‘Very melodic - lots of harmonies. Quite thoughtful songs in their construction and how they’re delivered. A flavour of Talk Talk.’ (Phil Moakes - Visual Radio Arts)
